How are we responding to America's needs?

Washington University continues to be a lively center of learning, research, and the exchange of ideas. We are one of the world's leading research universities, and our undergraduate program has never been more vibrant with a wonderfully diverse and talented body of students.

At the same time, Mark Wrighton and his associates have continued to extend the University's reach both as a leader in the greater St. Louis community and the world, with particular emphasis on Asian programs.

Leaving Washington University alone --being satisfied with things the way they are--is something that has never been a part of our culture. Call it what you will:

a restless striving to advance ... a strong desire to do better and to do better faster ... a burning ambition to fully achieve our mission of teaching, research, and service to society; we have never tolerated the status quo. That, perhaps, has never been more evident than in recent years as the University's impact has continued to extend farther and farther beyond the borders of this country.

The past fiscal year marked Washington University's recommitment to a higher sense of purpose, to the principles that have propelled this University to worldwide distinction, especially in the realm of medical research. Other new initiatives, ranging from the Center for Latino Family Research in the George Warren Brown School of Social Work to the International Center for Advanced Renewable Energy and Sustainability (I-CARES), promise to build on our reputation as we partner with other of the world's premier universities. Through initiatives like I-CARES, which is intended to encourage and coordinate university-wide and external collaborative research in the areas of renewable energy and sustainability (including biofuels, CO2 mitigation, and coal-related issues), we can serve important current needs while playing a leading role in shaping our evolving global society.

As you read this Annual Report, I think you will agree that the faculty and staff of Washington University have not been caught napping; they have not left things alone; they are ever working to preserve and reinforce the University's excellence. In the years ahead, we must continue to do so as we are faced with the extraordinary pace of change in our society and around the globe. We welcome your involvement in and support of our efforts.
